West Chop was established as a summer community on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in 1887. It was a very special little summer place that brought lucky guests first by steamboat. We named our brand for “The Chop”, but it is just one part of our favorite island’s story.
Martha’s Vineyard - simply called “The Vineyard” by locals and frequent visitors - is one of the most celebrated summer destinations in America. This island in Massachusetts has been a much loved destination for everyone from Hollywood celebrities and U.S. Presidents seeking an elegant yet relaxed getaway. Everyone from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Barack Obama to Carly Simon and John Belushi has enjoyed the timeless allure of this island destination.
The Vineyard has also been immortalized in many novels and poems. It has been home and muse to countless artists and musicians.
Martha’s Vineyard is quite simply the very essence of the ideal New England summer. It offers visitors a unique experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
The Vineyard is known for its beautiful beaches and ideal temperatures. Visitors can choose from quaint inns and cottages to relax in. It is of course the ultimate destination for seafood! Fresh farm-to-table as well as ocean-to-table food is plentiful at the many local restaurants.
Along with pristine beaches, chic eateries, and beautiful hotels, Martha’s Vineyard also boasts an interesting history. The Wampanoag people were the first to live on the island. European settlers arrived in the 17th century. It was once a community that featured many deaf residents, and was known to be a place where everyone knew sign language. The beaches of The Vineyard were at one time one of the only places where Black Americans could summer on the beach - most of the other beaches and pools in the country were not integrated.

Each product is named for a different beloved place on the island, and captures the essence of laid back casual luxury that is unique to this famed destination.
